Sanyo Electric Co. (OOTC:SANYY) said Tuesday it plans to nurture a new business with solar power bicycles and parking lot systems that have power charge facilities for such bikes.
As part of the promotion, it has set up two parking lots equipped with solar panels and lithium-ion battery systems at railway stations in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward.
The Osaka-based electronics maker provided 40 of its ''eneloop'' electric hybrid bikes to each of the parking lots, enabling the ward office to rent them out for a fee, it said.
The new parking lots are located near the Sakura Josui station of the Keio railway line and Sakura Shinmachi station of the Tokyu Den-en-toshi line.
Each parking space has a 7.56-kilowatt solar-lithium-ion battery system capable of powering 40 bikes at a time, it said.
Sanyo also delivered 20 eneloop bikes to a parking lot near Kyodo station of the Odakyu line, another location in Setagaya.
The company sees potential demand for the business at other railway stations and bike parking lots at condominium complexes.
